Dear Parent or Guardian:

As we enter the new school year, we want you to know that the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District takes the health and safety of students seriously and are taking steps to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. We are prepared to communicate quickly and effectively through multiple means, including Connect Ed, flyers and e-mail messages, in any urgent situation.

Throughout the course of the school year, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District will be closely monitoring students, teachers and staff for any symptoms of the H1N1 virus. We are committed to quickly and accurately communicating necessary updates on the flu, and community’s health, to ensure students remain safe and informed.

Symptoms of the swine flu are similar to regular influenza.  These symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.  Also, a significant number of people who have been infected with novel H1N1 flu virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. For the safety of students, faculty and the community the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is asking those people to stay home to prevent further infection. 

People who have flu-like symptoms and have traveled to areas where the swine flu has been confirmed should seek medical attention. Those with flu-like symptoms that have not traveled to those areas should stay at home and contact their primary care physician for further advice.

Please continue to follow the news and take the following everyday actions to reduce your risk:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and   discard the tissue immediately.
• Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand cleaner.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands.
• Avoid close contact with sick people

Please know that we have taken all appropriate measures here to provide a safe and healthy environment for your children and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
