NLMUSD Educator Wins National Teacher Award - Kelly Garcia Earns PLTW Gateway Honor

Kelly Garcia, a teacher on special assignment and Project Lead the Way program coordinator with the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, has been named a Project Lead the Way Gateway Teacher of the Year.

Garcia, who teaches engineering at Benton Middle School and Norwalk High School, recently won the national award for her diligent work to engage all NLMUSD students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, which are known as STEM subjects. She has focused on helping increase female and underrepresented students in STEM pathways.

La Mirada Teacher Named One of Best in LA County

A veteran visual arts teacher known for her passionate teaching and a classroom style that focuses on guiding students toward innovation and creativity has been named a 2017 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year.

Jennifer Hodge, of Benton Middle Magnet School in La Mirada, was one of the 16 county teachers of the year who were announced September 29th by the Los Angeles County Office of Education at ceremonies held at a Universal City hotel. Norwalk-La Mirada Principals’ Night Fundraiser Raises More than $1,000 for Student Scholarships

Hundreds of Norwalk-La Mirada students and their families took a trip to the Golden Arches during NLMUSD’s inaugural Principals’ Night, helping the Norwalk-La Mirada Administrators Association (NLMAA) raise more than $1,000 for student scholarships.

Students from Corvallis Middle and Morrison, Moffitt and New River Elementary schools lined up out the door of a Norwalk McDonalds restaurant on May 2, while the schools’ principals volunteered their time, working the counter, taking orders, delivering food, even going from table to table selling cookies.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Launches Sixth Middle School College and Career Center

Los Alisos Middle School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students rapped motivational verses to celebrate the opening of their college and career center.

“The college and career center is going to give students ideas on where they want to go, who they want to be and what they want to do,” AVID eighth-grader Daisy Esquivel, 14, said. “I think the center will impact the younger students – I didn’t think about going to college until I was in eighth grade.”

Provisional Board Member Appointment Notice

On May 22, 2017, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, Board of Education took action to appoint Jude Cazares to fill the vacancy created by Margarita Rios’ resignation. Ms. Rios was elected to the Norwalk City Council on March 7, 2017. On April 5, 2017 she submitted her resignation from the Board of Education effective April 11, 2017.

Mr. Cazares’ appointment is provisional for 30 days and becomes effective thereafter unless a petition calling for a special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed with the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
