Welcome to New River Elementary
Welcome New River Families,
The start of the 2011-2012 school year at New River went smoothly. We hit the ground running and it was "business as usual" in the best sense of the word! Already in place:
**Reading Intervention for 1st - 3rd grade students.
Reading Intervention takes place daily for a one hour block. Teachers and students in the intervention program were invited to a "Teacher Tea" to hear about the program and how it supports classroom instruction. New River held its first Family Fun Reading Night on Wednesday, September 28th. Monthly meetings have been scheduled to provide information to our New River parents on how they can support their students at home.
**iPass Math Intervention for 3rd and 4th graders.
The iPass intervention program helps students who need extra support in math. Students visit the computer lab daily for 50min. Students can also access their iPass account from home. Another great program they have access to is Thinkfast. Thinkfast is a fluency building program in the areas of addition and subtraction and mulitiplication and division. Students also have the opportunity to work in their classroom on iPass and Thinkfast.
**Outdoor Intervention for all students K-5th grade.
Our recess coach is once again outside daily for morning and lunch recess providing STRUCTURED games and activities that get our students involved and moving! This year we have started a Reflection Room that is open during morning and lunch recess times. This is where the students who have not turned in homework or did not use their class time wisely are sent to finish work or reflect on their actions during class or recess time. Coach Ortega will also be working with individual classes K-5 through out the year on character building skills.
**Attendance Station
Our new Attendance Station is run by our Attendance Clerk, Angie Guzman-Herndon. "Miss Angie" is conveniently stationed by our main entrance daily from 8:00 to 8:25 to assist parents with absence notes, give out tardy slips, etc. Check out our website and you'll find our on-line absence slip which parents can fill out on-line and send directly to our attendance clerk!

**Art Studio- where teachers will teach art using the "Meet the Masters" curriculum.
**Music-After School Strings Orchestra where students will learn to play violin, viola, and cello.
We are so very excited here at New River with all the wonderful things that are going on.
