Principal's Message

Our mission at D.D Johnston Elementary is to Build Great Character One Pillar At A Time We believe in providing all our students the building blocks that will assist them in becoming well-rounded citizens.  Our dedicated staff is committed to creating an environment where every child feels safe and enjoys coming to school every day.

 Our Unique Programs

Our school has demonstrated excellence by providing students programs that deliver them the tools to show achievement.  We are proud to offer a variety of programs that meet our students’ academic, social, and behavioral needs.  Our academic programs are aligned to the California State Standards and students are assessed on a regular basis to make sure they have attained mastery.  Parents are notified every three weeks on their child’s progress through our schoolwide progress report system.

Our ExCEL program, which stands for Excellence: A Commitment to Every Learner, provides all students with enrichment and intervention in the areas of Language Arts and Mathematics.  This is an additional block in reading and math to support students who are not quite there yet and enrichment for those who are ready to move forward.

Our Visual and Performing Arts Programs (VAPA) include a variety of experiences.  Our Kindergarten through Third Grade students participate in the Meet the Masters Art program where they study 5 artists throughout the year and create masterpieces.  Our Third and Fourth Grade students receive Music Class through the use of Recorders.  Fifth Graders take a 50-minute world percussion orchestra class once a week by our artist in residence.  In addition, Fifth Grade students are invited to join the D.D. Johnston Dance Academy where they learn tap dancing, rhythm and movement, and perform throughout the year.  This year, we will enhance our VAPA program by adding Elementary Percussion and Singing to all Kindergartners and First Graders and Handbells to our Second Graders.  You are welcomed to visit our site for dates and times to our Winter Concerts in December 2014.

 Building Character

An important part of our vision includes educating children on the foundations of great character.  We have adopted the Character Counts! Program and incorporate the Six Pillars of Character throughout our school.  Not only is it visually represented on our walls, classrooms, cafeteria, etc., it is the foundation of everything we do as a community of learners – students and adults!  We are building great character one pillar at a time.

At D.D. Johnston Elementary we are proud to call ourselves a School Family.  We are a team working together in creating a bright future for our children so they can one day look back and see all the people who cared about them and who believed in them every step of the way.
