Dr. Roberto “Rob” Cancio was elected to the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education in 2021 and currently serves as Vice President of the Board. Throughout his tenure, he has held key leadership roles, including Chair of the Finance Committee, Representative to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association, and Delegate to the California School Boards Association, representing 31 districts across Los Angeles County.
A proud product of NLMUSD, Dr. Cancio grew up in Norwalk and attended Moffitt Elementary, Dolland Elementary, Hutchinson Middle School, La Mirada High School, and Southeast Military Academy. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he committed himself to public service and education, earning degrees from East Los Angeles College (A.A.), the University of California, Berkeley (B.A.), the University of Southern California (M.B.A.), and the University of Miami (M.A., Ph.D.). He has also completed professional programs at Harvard University, the University of Florida, and Loyola Marymount University.
Under his leadership, the district has increased grant funding, adopted strategic financial reforms, and expanded student success initiatives. His priorities include accelerating student achievement, strengthening school safety, and ensuring long-term fiscal responsibility.
Dr. Cancio is a seasoned professional with experience as a published scholar, veteran, educator, and business executive, with specialized expertise in operations, data analytics, and public policy. He currently serves as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Dedicated to giving back, Dr. Cancio is actively involved in the community through the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion, and the Norwalk Kiwanis Club.
