Trustee Area Transition
The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education will begin By-Trustee Area voting beginning with the November 2024 Board elections.
At a Special Board Meeting held on Monday, August 29, 2022, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to transition from an At-Large Voting System to a By-Trustee Area Voting System beginning with the November 2024 Board elections.
The District previously received a demand letter on July 25, 2022, from attorney Kevin I. Shenkman requesting the transition under the California Voting Rights Act.
At the Board of Education Meeting on Thursday, September 29, 2022, the Board approved a resolution to adopt the criteria for trustee area maps. The National Demographics Corporation (NDC) and the Norwalk-La Mirada community then submitted maps for Board approval over the course of several meetings. The Board of Education unanimously approved a trustee map during the December 5, 2022 meeting, passing a resolution to submit the map to the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization for review and adoption.
The County Committee unanimously approved the proposed map, allowing the District to hold trustee area elections beginning with the November 2024 election. To view the adopted map as well as draft maps submitted by the community and NDC, click on the link below.
