I hope this message finds you well. This past Friday afternoon, California Governor Gavin Newsom directed all schools in Los Angeles County to begin the 2020-21 school year using Distance Learning only. The Governor stated that in order to reopen schools for in-person instruction, counties must be off of the California Department of Public Health’s COVID19 Monitoring List for 14 consecutive days. Los Angeles County is identified as one of the counties that does not meet the criteria to reopen schools with an in-person format. In addition, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health cautioned school districts against in-person learning at this time.
Staff has been working diligently on our school reopening plans. As I shared in a previous update, we have been planning for two learning models: Hybrid and Distance Learning. Due to current public health guidelines, the Board of Education approved the Distance Learning model to start the 2020-2021 school year. We will remain with Distance Learning until further notice and it is determined we can return safely. I encourage you to click on this link to view our Return-to-School Update that was recently presented to the Board of Education.
Our District strives to provide the highest-quality learning and ensure social-emotional support through Distance Learning. Soon, our families will be receiving more information about Distance Learning, including workshops and instructional videos to adjust to this new learning environment.
To support our community, we have launched a webpage of resources and information as we move towards the reopening of our schools. This webpage will feature student enrollment information, technology and Distance Learning resources, health and safety information, and more. The webpage can be accessed with the following link: www.nlmusd.org/reopening/.
We understand the Distance Learning model impacts many of our families; therefore, we are exploring a variety of childcare options, including working with our local YMCA on a fee-based program. However, it is unlikely that this service will be available prior to school starting on August 13, 2020.
Rest assured, I will send additional updates to families as more information about our plans become available. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this pandemic. Please stay healthy and safe.
