Kim has served the students and families of NLMUSD for over 25 years. Her students and colleagues at La Pluma Elementary School in La Mirada are impacted by Kim’s belief in promoting kindness, integrity, and risk-taking on campus and in the classroom.
Kim teaches and leads with a servant’s heart. She understands the importance of prevention, intervention, enrichment for our students, and the relationship building needed to impact a student both academically as well as meeting their social and emotional needs. You will often see Mrs. Hyun leading her team within to explore student data, discuss teaching practices, and develop next steps with instruction or behavior intervention to meet the needs of ALL of our fourth-grade students. When entering her classroom, you can feel and see that she is promoting the importance of risk-taking within her students as well as stretching their thinking, encouraging student conversations, and developing their problem-solving skills.
Kim serves in many leadership roles. She currently serves as a fourth-grade team leader, our student council advisor, our upper grade math demonstration teacher, and she represents her team on our site leadership team. She pours her leadership skills and guidance not only into her colleagues but also into our student leaders on campus. She has been instrumental in bringing many philanthropic opportunities for our students such as raising coins for cancer research, leading our Warm Hands – Warm Feet campaign for the homeless, encouraging food drive campaigns, involving our students in the Great Kindness Challenge, and will often find ways to have her student leaders continue to help spread kindness.
Kim is not only committed to her students and our learning community at La Pluma but she is also a dedicated wife and mother of two. She has a daughter graduating from High School tonight and a son graduating from UCLA on Monday. The love of her life, Bing, would say she is kind, caring, and committed in all that she does.
Congratulations to Kim Hyun, NLMUSD Teacher of the Year!
