Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Letter and Resources

Last spring our Board of Education adopted a resolution to show our commitment to our students’ safety and right to privacy. Actions taken include:

  • Designating every NLMUSD school site and facility as a safe haven for our students, families and the community;
  • Not allowing ICE to enter school sites or district properties without prior approval from the Superintendent;
  • Having District staff treat all students equitably in the receipt of all school services;
  • Providing limited student information to colleges, military recruiters, and prospective employers only
As stated by the U.S. Supreme Court in Plyler v. Doe (1982), all students have a constitutional right of equal access to education regardless of their immigration status. The Court decision also noted that “education has a fundamental role in maintaining the fabric of our society” and that it “provides the basic tools by which individuals might lead economically productive lives to the benefit of us all.”

The above statement has even more truth today than when it was written three decades ago. To deny any child their right to education is to compromise our civic and economic future.
