Olympic Gold Medalist Jennie Finch Returns to La Mirada High, Leads Weekend Softball Camp

Olympic gold medalist and La Mirada High graduate Jennie Finch teamed up with a cadre of Olympians and elite sluggers to coach and inspire 120 softball student athletes to dream and believe at La Mirada High School from Jan. 21-22.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back at La Mirada High, where it all started for me,” Finch said. “Whatever your pursuits may be, stay confident, work hard and step up to the challenge.”

La Mirada High School Sophomore Receives NASCAR Award Recognizing Racing Skills

Zooming across a black-and-white checkered finish line at 140 miles an hour in a 400-horsepower car is not unusual for La Mirada High School sophomore Ryan Vargas, who’s been racing since he was 11.

“Growing up, I always loved monster trucks, demolition derbies and Thomas the Tank Engine,” Ryan said. “When my dad took me to a NASCAR event at Irwindale Speedway, I found out that kids could actually race cars and saw it as an opportunity to do something I loved.”

Dulles Elementary Students Win Golden Ticket with Production of the Musical “Willy Wonka, Jr.”

Adorned by top hats, green wigs and golden tickets, Dulles Elementary School students heralded the arrival of the “Candy Man” and brought to life the timeless characters of Charlie Bucket and the Oompa-Loompas during two performances of the musical “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, Jr.” held at Benton Middle School on Jan. 27 and 28.

The two-act musical, adapted from Dahl’s beloved children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder, highlighted the talents of 60 Dulles Elementary K-5 students and incorporated musical numbers, choreography, elaborate set changes and star turns for its featured players.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Elementary School Enhances Classroom Learning with Surround-Sound Audio

New River Elementary School third-grade student Cathy Arzac stood in front of her class with a microphone hanging around her neck, confidently reading a story to her peers as her voice carried across the classroom at an even volume with the help of a surround-sound audio system.

“I like the microphone because people can really hear me and it makes your voice really loud,” Cathy, 8, said. “I want to be like my teacher and be calm and relaxed.”

Norwalk High to Offer AP Capstone Diploma Program

Norwalk High School will join 53 California high schools in offering a new Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone diploma program in fall 2017 that teaches students college-level research skills.

AP Capstone is a new tier of specialized instruction that centers on collaborative learning and critical thinking, allowing students to strengthen their reasoning processes and analytic techniques.

Norwalk High Seniors Raise Over $16,000 for Charity for Charities Event

Norwalk High School seniors Caleb and Jordan Volpei shared with their classmates the story of a family friend, Krista Dornburg, who lost her job and house while undergoing cancer treatments in 2009, but pushed through the difficult time with positive spirits.

Four years after the treatments, the cancer returned. Ignoring the advice of her doctors to stay home, Dornburg went to church on Sundays and attended the Breast Cancer Angels Christmas Ball.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Families Receive Holiday Gifts During 8th Annual Toy Shop Breakfast

Sleigh bells were jingling at the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District office over holiday break, as dozens of families in need were invited to take part in the eighth annual Toy Shop gift giveaway and breakfast, held Dec. 22.

Over 175 families were treated to a full-service breakfast and participated in group activities. Parents had their choice of 580 new toys to give as holiday presents for their children and District staff wrapped the presents as part of a community campaign to brighten the holidays for the District’s neediest families.

Norwalk-La Mirada High School Students to Perform in Annual Tournament of Roses Parade

Eight high school students from the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District have been selected to perform in the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade Honor Band.

The students were selected from a pool of about 500 musicians throughout Southern California and will join more than 100 Honor Band members consisting of instrumentalists, a flag pageantry and the Pasadena City College’s Lancer Marching Band.
