The Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) program is intended to provide students and parents with educational options for preplanned absences from school for a period between five (5) and twenty (20) days. During STIS, students remain actively enrolled in their respective home school and are provided schoolwork to be completed for the duration of the absence. STIS is a voluntary, optional educational offering available to elementary and secondary students.
To be eligible for STIS, parents must notify the home school within five (5) days of the absence and complete the Alternative Education application. On the application, the beginning and end dates of the absence must be explicitly listed. If enrollment into STIS is approved, the dates listed on the application may not be amended or altered.
Students will receive work from their teacher(s) for the duration of the absence. Students must submit the completed work on the first day they return to school. Teachers will assess the work and, if complete and satisfactory, the student will receive credit for the duration of the absence. If submitted work is incomplete or unsatisfactory, the student will receive credit for a portion of the absence. Should this occur, portions of the absence will be considered as unexcused.
STIS enrollment will not be approved for absences beyond the last attendance reporting period for the school year which generally occurs in March/April. Specific dates will be updated annually.
Questions regarding participation in the STIS program can be directed to the individual school sites or through the Alternative Education department.
