District Advisory Committee

On Monday, October 21, 2019, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, Board of Education directed staff to form a District Advisory Committee to study declining enrollment in the District and to make recommendations regarding re-alignment of school attendance boundaries and possibly school closures.

The Board has approved the members of the Advisory Committee, consisting of 11 members, at the November 18, 2019 meeting.  In selecting Committee members, the Board considered the statutory requirements for composition of the Committee, applicants’ professional and/or practical experience and recognition in or contributions to the community, diversity of experience on the Committee as a whole, and representation on the Committee of the communities within the District.

  • The ethnic, age group, and socioeconomic composition of the District
  • The business community, such as store owners, managers, or supervisors
  • Landowners or renters, with preference to be given to representatives of neighborhood associations
  • Teachers
  • Administrators
  • Parents/guardians of students, and
  • Persons with expertise in environmental impact, legal contracts, building codes, and land use planning, including, but not limited to, knowledge of the zoning and other land use restrictions of the cities and counties in which the surplus property is located

The Advisory Committee will meet twice a month starting in January 2020, and if necessary  through May 2020.  The tentative meetings dates are January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27, March 12 and 26, April 23, and May 7 and 21.  Meetings will be held in the evening at the District Office from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Participants are expected to attend all meetings.  The meeting will be open to the public and its agendas and minutes subject to public inspection.

The Advisory Committee process will result in recommendations for the Board of Education to consider in addressing declining enrollment.
