The 2018-19 school year marks my fourth year as Norwalk-La Mirada Unified’s superintendent and I am honored to be able to serve all of our dedicated and hard-working students, teachers, staff and administrators as we work together to ensure this year is filled with success.
Over the summer, we have refined our District key focus areas to help guide us in strengthening our District throughout the year:
* High-quality teaching and learning
* Research-based best practices
* College and career readiness
Each focus area has its own strategies to implement, including our new math campaign, the 2020 Learning Initiative and professional learning communities.
Our math campaign is geared toward using teaching strategies that will engage students in hands-on activities and deconstruct math problems in ways that make them easy to understand. Training and resources are available to our parents to help support their children’s learning at home. By using new methods and collaborating with our parents, we are expecting to boost student achievement in math.
It is important that our students receive the highest level of academic instruction with the most effective technology tools relevant to their education and careers. Our 2020 Learning Initiative is focused on providing students with access to laptops and iPads. Specific grades levels are able to take personal devices home. Teachers are able to use data from the technology devices to create personalized lessons based on each student’s needs to better increase understanding in the classroom.
Professional development is just as important in continuing our District’s success. Norwalk-La Mirada Unified offers workshops for our teachers and staff to help them reach their career goals. This will help our teachers use the best practices in the industry while finding new ways to reach out to their students, and also help our staff and administrators support our teachers.
I am continuing to collaborate with the Norwalk-La Mirada PTA Council to sponsor monthly Superintendent-Parent forums. I also plan to attend PTA meetings at each school to increase parent engagement. While our students are involved in rigorous instruction at our schools, our parents also should be equipped with the skills to support their children at home.
Thank you to all our teachers, staff, administrators and parents are dedicated to the success of our students. I look forward to the many accomplishments our community will achieve throughout the year.
