Computer Donation Guidelines

The Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District (NLMUSD) continually seeks to expand the technology resources available to students and teachers. Computer donations are a great source of low-cost equipment, but in order for them to be properly supported within the NLMUSD environment, a number of critical items need to be considered. Schools that wish to accept computer donations must coordinate efforts with the NLMUSD Technology Services Department Office (562-868-0431 ext.102159) or e-mail

Equipment must be manufactured by Dell, which has been defined as the District standard for new computer purchases for overall standardization, support, and repair purposes. The computer must be three years old or less.

The minimum technical specifications are set forth in order that the computer be capable of running Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.11 and above, in a satisfactory manner, with no modifications or upgrades required; be able to be remotely supported with District technology; and be a make/model/configuration that the District can support with the imaging process.  At this time, due to our plan to support Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, Max OS 10.10 +, we require 4 GB of RAM as a minimum.

Intel i3

Intel i3

Hard Drive

Windows 7 Pro

Donated Chromebooks must be new and one of the 3 accepted models (Lenovo N21, N22, N23 series devices).  These are the district purchased models that we can image and support.  We highly recommend that money, NOT devices, be donated.  This allows NLMUSD to track the devices and ensures the devices are eligible for repair. The site will be required to purchase a management license for each of the Chromebooks donated or purchased with donated funds.

As of May 2015, iPads and iPod Touches cannot be donated to NLMUSD, due to a change in Apple’s protocols regarding registration restrictions for the Device Enrollment Program (DEP).  NLMUSD is identified as a corporate institution, by Apple, and we can only register devices that we purchase or that have been purchased by other corporate institutions. We CANNOT register devices purchased by individuals, Foundations, or PTAs, etc.  Without being able to register them, as NLMUSD devices, we cannot provide the same functionality and security that we do for NLMUSD purchased devices.

No printers will be accepted as donations, due to the printer consolidation project and printer contract.

Must be flat panels, not CRTs, and must be a minimum screen size of 19”.

Please work directly with ITS before accepting any donations.

  1. Corporation contacts NLMUSD. Schools contacted directly by a corporation wishing to donate computers will submit Technology Services work order.
  2. Technology Services Department will initiate the process which includes the following: Review the inventory to determine if computers meet District standards. Contact the corporation that the donation is approved or declined for classroom use. Process the equipment donation form for Board of Education approval.
  3. After Board approval, Technology Services Department will install the standard image and deliver the computers to the school.
