Pedestrian Safety

It is always a good practice to talk with children about safety, especially when they are not in the presence of adults. All children should know the following:

·       Their name, address, and phone number

·       Use the buddy system, walk in groups of two or more - avoid walking alone

·       Trust your instincts - if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, look for help immediately

·       If a stranger approaches you, do not speak to him or her. Never approach a stranger in a car. Just keep walking. Do not accept candy of any other items from a stranger. Never walk with a stranger, no matter what he or she tells you.

·       If someone is following you try to remember the license plate and description of his or her car and immediately tell a trusted adult.

·       Remember what the suspicious stranger looks like and what they are wearing.

When talking with children, remember to explain that all strangers are not bad strangers. Examples of good strangers are policemen, firemen, security officers, and teachers. Let's make sure are youth are confident and prepared.
