Alternative Programs

The Alternative Programs and Support Department is committed to providing a variety of options for your students to have academic success in a flexible and innovative environment. Our goal is to work directly with students and parents to develop a plan that meets individual needs on a path towards success and offer tools for academic and socio-emotional support.

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District offers a program to provide Virtual instruction for students in grades K-5 as well as 9-12. The Virtual Academy and Independent Study are both programs that fall under the umbrella of the independent study model of instructional delivery within the Alternative Programs and Support Department. The Virtual program offers a flexible schedule based on student needs in a strictly online environment.

Virtual courses are offered through the Acellus platform for grades K-5 and the Edgenuity platform for grades 6-12. Classes for students in the Virtual program mirror the timeline that is set at the traditional school setting. Students take a full course load simultaneously per trimester/quarter/semester, depending on their
grade level.

Students participating in the Virtual program are supported by credentialed staff members from the Alternative Programs and Services Department. The staff members coordinate instruction and support with both students and parents.
