Students Residing in Another District Who Would Like to Attend a School in NLMUSD

All requests for students applying to enroll in the NLMUSD from outside of the district should be initiated at the student’s school or district of residence, not the school to which the student is applying to attend in NLMUSD.

If the inter-district transfer is granted by the school/district of residence, the application should be submitted via email at permits@nlmusd.org to the Student and Family Services Office for processing. The application will not be accepted until it is received with all required information and documentation.

Transferring to a different District - Reasoning must be in accordance with Board Policy 5117

2026-2027

2026-2027 School Year - The Open Enrollment application period for transfers out of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District for the 2026-2027 school year was December 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026, and is now closed.

ALL late permit applications submitted after the January 31st deadline will need to include an appeal letter explaining the reasoning for late submission. Please also include supporting documentation for the reason selected on your application.

Please contact your school of residence to schedule an appointment with the administrator or designee to complete an Exit Survey. To find your assigned school, please use our School Locator. After completing the Exit Survey, the school site administrator or designee will email you a link to the Inter-District Permit Application.

2027 - 2028

2027-2028 School year - In order to transfer to a school outside the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District (inter-district permit), families must complete and submit an application during the designated application period, December 1, 2026- January 31, 2027.

Reasons for Granting Inter-District Attendance Permits

Child Care

A permit may be granted for a student in grades K-5 only who is cared for by someone other than the parent/guardian or a Childcare Center in a district different than the student’s place of residence, if the parent/guardian is employed or if both parents/guardians are employed. The parent/guardian will be required to obtain a recent document on letterhead stationary that includes the following:

Employer’s signature.
Employment verification information to verify that the individual is workingduring the child’s school hours.
Verification that he/she is currently employed on a full-time regular basis for not less than 30 hours per week.

Anticipated Move

A permit may be granted if the parent/guardian of a student certifies that a residence is being built in another district or attendance zone; or that money is in escrow for the purpose of securing a residence in another district which the family will occupy within the semester in which the permit is requested. Parents shall furnish documentation, e.g., escrow papers, utility receipts or other acceptable evidence.

A permit may be considered for a student if one or both parents work within the boundaries of the school district that they are applying for. The parent/guardian will be required to obtain a recent document on letterhead stationary that includes the following:
